AOL Instant Messenger Conversation with Emily Lawton re: Peru, Owning Too Many Novels
EGL: wassssup?
JJH: researching life as an expatriate
EGL: where?
JJH: south america. no specific country.
EGL: i suggest peru.
JJH: it appeals to my rational nature, but I think it would be hard to convince myself to go through with it and move--too many commitments to the Middle Class ProfessionaCareer/Family track.
EGL: well, it would not be easy. plus, you do not find south american women very hot. not your "type."
JJH: I don't think I've known enough south american girls. some are beautiful.
EGL: that might be. you could also move to a shack in the appalachians.
JJH: the operative word there is "shack." an inexpensive bungalow on the beach, with the occasional scorpion vs. SHACK: it is not a tough call.
EGL: i thought you liked shacks!
JJH: i am just having a day of "my life is a rut/my future predictable"-ness. so late 1990s gen-x angsty, and I am not even gen-X.
EGL: heh
JJH: if I were _really_ gen x, I would write a screenplay about contemplating peru, without actually going to peru, and aaron and I would make a movie about it. the protagonist, in the movie, would also make a movie about a guy making a movie about a character considering going to peru but not doing it, but that character would make a zine about not going to peru, not a movie.
EGL: goddamn it!
JJH: what?
EGL: that shit's for losers.
JJH: also today I have been thinking I own too many books. this is mixed in with my whole I'm Too Consumerish and Bland and Need To Live Life TO THE EXTREME train of thought.
EGL: to the extreme eh? have you tried a mountain dew?
JJH: I like books so much, but unlike say CDs, there is only very limited benefit to 'having them on hand'. and you can just use them for free at the library
EGL: you can... look things up.
EGL: sometimes you might want to refer to other books. except novels... no need for that, really.
JJH: novels are what I meant. "building construction illustrated" is useful, "geek love" not so much.
EGL: you look smart for girls coming over.
JJH: I think they've only impressed wakefield. and jessica's mom.
EGL: well, how many girls did you bring home?
JJH: not many, and they're almost always too drunk to read the spines
EGL: probably, by that point, they're already impressed. or at least, impressed enough
